Tax Benefits
- Current regulations permit an income tax deduction for
unreimbursed educational expenses (registration fees, cost of travel, lodging and 80
percent of the cost of meals) undertaken to maintain or improve skills required for one's
employment; or to meet the express written requirement of an employer. Conference expenses
may be considered ordinary business expenses.

- Those who are employees are cautioned that under the 1986
Tax Reform Act, their deductions for educational expenses and other miscellaneous itemized
deductions are allowable only to the extent that the total of such deductions for the year
exceeds two percent of adjusted gross income. Self-employed registrants are not
subject to this two percent threshold. Most employers offer paid leave, pay
registration
fees and some expenses for continuing education.
